The 4 Keys to Finding Affirmations that Really Work!

Affirmations have been known to work for many people. Muhammad Ali, for example, is well known for repeatedly affirming “I am the greatest,” on his way to becoming the greatest heavyweight champion in the world. However, while affirmations work beautifully for some people, for others there are often disappointments. Finding affirmations that really work at times is a process.

Identifying affirmations that really work is an individual journey, and no two people will be able to use the same exact affirmations all of the time and expect to see consistent results. Knowing the code on how to select the right affirmations is critical to using affirmations with success.

So here are a few tips to help you find and design affirmations that really work for you. Use these tips to evaluate affirmations before you put them into practice to ensure they move you toward your dreams, rather than away from them.

Affirmation Tip #1: They MUST, MUST, MUST feel good!

There are lots of affirmations out there that you can find and use in your day-to-day life, but before you start using them repeatedly, say them out loud and ask yourself how you really feel about them. If they make you feel irritated, sad, angry, or even just completely indifferent, you are best advised to keep looking for a better affirmation.

Affirmations only work when they evoke true, positive emotion from you, so always evaluate how an affirmation makes you feel before you add it in to your daily routine.

Affirmation Tip#2: They must be true to you!

In order for an affirmation to “work” it must be a true affirmation. Affirmation is, by definition, a statement or preposition that is declared to be true.

The reason affirmations work is because in affirmation we are declaring that we already “are” what we want to be. Because we attract the essence of what we are, affirming the things we feel good about in our lives attracts more of them to us.

Case in point: If I am a wealthy person, using the affirmation “I am wealthy and abundant,” would be true to me, would probably feel pretty good, and therefore would most likely attract even more money to me. If I get what I am, and I am wealthy and abundant, affirming this fact will amplify my attraction.

However, if I am experiencing poverty, this affirmation will probably feel very fake and false, which will result in negative feelings, violating rule number one. In this case, the affirmation would actually activate the feeling of not having money, which would push money further away from me.

So how do you find affirmations that are true to you in situations like these? If you are trying to attract something you don’t have, simply preface the affirmation with the phrase “I am in the process of becoming/finding.”

Another phrase that works is “I am on the path to becoming/finding.”

For example: “I am in the process of becoming more wealthy and abundant” or “I am on the path to find more wealth and abundance.”

As you really are working toward wealth and abundance with these affirmations, these rephrased statements will actually resonate some truth within you, and therefore they have the power to make you feel good and attract the focus of the affirmation (wealth and abundance).

Affirmation Tip #3: They must be phrased in the positive.

On my blog I’ve pretty much beaten the horse to death on the importance of positive language.  However, it is still worth noting that your affirmations should always be phrased in the positive, and focus on what you want rather than what you don’t want.

Here are a couple of examples of what I mean:

Wrong Affirmation: “I am not poor.”

Right Affirmation: “I am wealthy,” or (as we mentioned above) “I am in the process of becoming wealthy.”

Wrong Affirmation: “I am going to quit smoking.”

Right Affirmation: “I am in the process of finding healthy habits”,” or “I am in the process of creating clearer lungs and easier breathing.”

Remember, we always get what the focus of our attention is. In the “Wrong Affirmations” above, the focus is on being poor, or smoking. This will only serve to attract more poverty and smoking into the affirmer’s life.

Always phrase your affirmations in the positive.

Affirmation Tip #4: They must be fresh!

If you’ve found an affirmation that feels good, is true to you and is phrased in the positive, you’ve done the majority of the work, so congrats! However, the last key to the puzzle with affirmations is that they must feel fresh.

You may have heard before that repetition is critical to ensure that your affirmations work, and this is partially true. YES, repetition works, but only insofar as you continue to feel positive emotions from your affirmations.

Just as you wouldn’t expect to see physical gains if you used the same workout day after day, week after week and year after year, you wouldn’t expect to see continuous results from using the same affirmation for long stretches of time.

Therefore, if an affirmation has become stale, boring or tedious, it’s time to give it a facelift and freshen it up a bit. Instead of using the same affirmation day after day after day, mix it up here and there to keep the positive emotions and good feelings flowing. This way, you will continue to derive positive vibrations from your affirmations, maximizing your success from using them.

So, if you’ve been using our example affirmation “I am in the process of becoming wealthy and abundant” for awhile and it’s time for something new, try substituting out a few words and phrases to trigger renewed interest and emotion.

For example “I’m moving towards a financially abundant lifestyle,” “I’m on the path of creating a more prosperous life for myself” or “I am in the process of becoming a money magnet.”

You can also go for a different approach and become more specific in your affirmation. For example “I am on the path to attract $1000,” or “I am moving toward receiving $500 in additional monthly income.”

One last note though, it IS ok to pull an old affirmation out of the archives! Keep a list of affirmations that work for you, and feel free to switch back to any old ones after you’ve had a bit of a break from them. After a little time off, the old affirmation will feel fresh again, so you might as well get some more mileage out of it.

Keep adding new affirmations into the mix, but feel free to rotate the old and the new. This strategy will keep you loaded up with good affirmations that work, are fresh, and continue to help you attract your goal.

Remember, make sure they feel good, they are true to you, they are phrased in the positive and they say fresh. Then, use your affirmations daily to attract more of the things you want into your life. This is the recipe for success with affirmations.
