Soul searching: The Seven Steps to Finding Out Who You Really Are And Finding Direction In Your Life

Are you feeling lost in life? You’re sick of your career, your relationships, your friendships, you feel dead inside, and you’ve lost the zest for life? 

I am sure you had experienced a time when you had no idea what direction your life was going. You felt confused as to which path you should choose. No matter how successful your career, relationship, or life is, you sometimes feel something is missing. You question yourself about what your life purpose is. To find this, you need to do some soul searching. 

Soul searching is taking a step back, examining your life and yourself. 

Sometimes people are just in limbo, lost, scared, empty, or even alone, making it easier to stay stuck in their old ways. If you are stuck, you may experience some of the following symptoms:

  • Lethargic and fatigued
  • Lack of motivation
  • Restless
  • Unhappy with your life
  • Alone
  • Irritable and moody
  • Self-loathing
  • Depressed 
  • Anxiety
  • Bored
  • Empty within
  • Lost
  • Negative

Can you relate to any of the above? Well, if you do, you are not alone.

Here are the steps of soul searching:

Spending time alone is the first step to soul searching. Spend time on your own, focusing on the present moment, where you are at, and about yourself. Spending time with yourself allows you to clear your mind and think clearly. You can revitalize your mind as well as your body. Some alone time can help you disconnect from technology.

2. Be kind to yourself 

Practice self-compassion. It enables you to improve your inner wellbeing. Being kind to yourself helps you identify how suffering is just a part of the shared human experience. You need to keep reminding yourself of this.

3. Spend time in nature

Go for a nature walk or gaze at the stars in the night sky. Spending time in nature helps you to put your life into perspective. It enables you to connect with something bigger than yourself. You will feel healthy and happy when you spend time in nature too.

4. Take up mindfulness meditation 

Many researchers have found out that adding mindfulness and meditation to your day is beneficial. They affect your body, mind, and emotional wellbeing. It also helps a person in decreasing health problems. When you reach a stage of equanimity in meditation, it positively affects the genes related to our immune system. Meditation also increases the brain’s prefrontal region. Mindfulness brings you a sense of wellbeing, making you feel genuinely happy. Practicing mindfulness meditation allows you to tame your mind.

Happiness lies within, and practicing mindfulness will definitely help.

5. Make time and space for reflection 

Reflect on the different sides of your life. We humans have a hard time identifying the causes of dissatisfaction in our lives. By reflecting on your thoughts and feelings, you can better understand your life purpose. You shouldn’t judge yourself while practicing self-reflection. Reflecting on yourself helps you to understand how true you are to yourself.

6. Define what a successful life is

Defining what a successful life is to you adds a spiritual dimension. This definition consists of our emotional wellbeing, spiritual wellbeing, physical wellbeing, values, resilience, personal mastery, ability to be present, and relationships with others. 

7. Construct a compelling vision for your future 

Reflect on yourself, focus on your strengths, values, and resources. Then go into the future and imagine your vision. Write it down in detail after visualizing every single aspect of your vision. Leave your obstacles behind.

Most people will do some “soul searching” when going through a rut or experiencing negative emotions that are difficult to deal with, but honestly, soul searching should be exercised regularly.
