How To Be Proactive And Not Reactive – Be A Winner

It is vital to be proactive if you want to be an effective leader. To Be reactive deals with reacting to previous events instead of anticipating future events, whereas being proactive is all about acting on a situation before it becomes a crisis.

Here are some strategic ways in which you can be proactive instead of being reactive:

1. Think Long-Term

Short-term thinking doesn’t go along with proactive leadership because it doesn’t help us see the big picture. Great leaders know the significance of long-term thinking, and they avoid falling for short-term returns. Set goals.

2. Seek to understand others

Proactive leaders seek to understand others because it provides excellent insights into how they can influence team members accordingly. A great leader can’t lead without the ability to understand others. Being a loyal and compassionate leader will show your team members that you are dedicated to understanding them.

3. Develop organizational skills

Proactive leaders can’t waste their time reacting to the environment. So to manage time effectively, it is essential to develop organizational skills and aim high through thinking long-term. You need to have organizational attributes such as file organizing, managing appointments efficiently, delegating tasks, and being reasonable in decision-making.

4. Aim for 80/20

This means that leaders should focus on their regular work 80% of the time, even though teamwork is important 20% of the time.

5. Be open to ideas

Being open to ideas enables proactive leaders to plan future events strategically. Every team member has something interesting to share so that proactive leaders can leverage information shared by other members.

6. Have a calm demeanor

A proactive leader inspires others by remaining calm and controlled. Don’t scream at your team members. If you have a calm demeanor, then you can easily influence others.

You cannot be proactive and reactive simultaneously, as being reactive means that you don’t take any action or make strategic choices in life. You just flow where life takes you, and then you react to what happens to you, sometimes positive, but more often than not with negative feelings.

Therefore being proactive is about owning your decisions and actions in life despite what other people do. It means that you are committed to moving forward in a direction you have chosen rather than following other people’s ideas and actions. When you are reactive, it means that someone else is calling the shots.
