This Little Octopus Is So Adorable That Scientists Want To Call It “Adorabilis”

Nature can be pretty cute or pretty terrifying depending on what animal you’re looking at, but on the cute side is this species of octopus discovered in 1990. It’s been called the Flapjack Octopus but scientists are thinking of naming it “adorabilis” due to the fact that it’s pretty freakin’ adorable. I mean, look at that face.



Stephanie Bush, a postdoctoral researcher at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute wants the animal’s scientific name to be Opisthotethis Adorabilis. The octopus measures 7 inches in diameter and lives in very deep waters, sometimes reaching depths of 450 meters or 1,476 feet.  It has a web between its legs which allows it to “parachute” through the water like so:
